Potent Cancer Protection from Cruciferous Vegetables

Diindolomethane (DIM’s) and the closely related indole-3-carbinol (IC-3), are potent substances found in cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli and Brussels sprouts. DIM’s have been shown to:

  • Assist in estrogen metabolism
  • Inhibit cancerous cells
  • Support liver detoxification pathways
  • Act as a potent antioxidant
  • Improve immunity by boosting thymus gland function

DIM is used extensively in cancer medicine, especially for its role in breast and prostate cancer protection, and in protocols to help improve liver function. Although IC3 and DIM’s are very closely related, DIM’s are more stable of the two and the preferred form of this nutrient.

Is it possible to get enough DIM’s from diet? It might be. However, cruciferous vegetables are goitrogenic (cause the thyroid glad to enlarge and inhibit thyroid hormone production). Daily intake of cruciferous vegetables at an intake high enough to assist estrogen metabolism can cause thyroid suppression. Studies have shown that isolated DIM supplementation actually has a protective effect on the thyroid gland, preventing this inhibition and providing protection against thyroid cancer.

Recommended dose: 75-300mg per day.
